Funeral for a Dead Baby Bird was written for the Kingston University Gamelan Ensemble. The piece uses pelog tuning (a seven note scale).
The title came about through discussion with the ensemble – half of the group thought the music reminded them of peace, whilst the other thought it reminded them of a graveyard. Also, as Jonathan was leaving his house on the day of recording, there was a dead baby bird outside his front door.
